What does a relaxer do to black hair?

what does a relaxer really do to black hair and what types of chemical that are used to make the hair straightWhat does a relaxer do to black hair?
A relaxer makes a black persons hair straight. To tell you the truth i dont know what chemicals are used to make your hair straight. I suggest you to go to hair salon, if you want to really relax your hair. What does a relaxer do to black hair?
I was watching a show on mtv...true life ...and there was a black girl on the show talking about having her hair done...and she said she was getting a perm and she was commenting on people saying how she was getting her hair curled...and she said im BLACK a perm straightens my hair...so i guess perms straighten black hair...but that was like the first time that i ever heard that..i was shocked that i never knew...lol.
A relaxer breaks down the bonds in your hair. Everyone has chemical bonds holding thier hair together and giving each strand its individual characteristics - Salt bonds, Water bonds, and Dissulfide bonds.

Salt bonds are broken by changes in pH (ex. when you dye your hair)

Water bonds are broken by changes in Heat (ex. when you blow dry your hair)

However Dissulfide bonds can only be broken/ changed by chemical reactions.

A relaxer breaks down and changes the dissulfide bonds in your hair so instead of the bond saying ';your hair is curly'; the bond now has been broken down and changed to say ';your hair is straight';.

Sounds all good and dandy and it pretty much sounds along the same premise as a perm but it isn't at all. Relaxers are actaully ONE PH LEVEL AWAY FROM NAIR. That's right, a relaxer is just ONE pH level away from literally MELTING the hair off your head, which is why we hear so many horror stories about womens hair snapping off or falling out due to at-home relaxers. They mix something wrong, leave it on too long, apply heat, and all of a sudden they're not straighteneing - they're melting.
A relaxer is basicly gonna straightin out the curly roots(the wavey hair by the scalp) If the rest of your hair is straight then you should only put it on your roots. However if all of your hair is curly for the first application only you can apply it on all of your hair and it will bring the curl out of your hair but not perminatly. Your hair will look much longer and straightin much better. As far as the chemicals you would want to get a gental relaxer. If you are young the have them for children and if you are 18 and over them you should buy the one that goes with your hair type. Example....course, dry, damaged ect. Well hope this helps
When you say black hair I'm assuming that you mean hair of a black or African American person. If so, a relaxer will permanently straighten your hair, basically frying it. Then you will have to make sure that you see a stylist every week to maintain the chemical balance of your hair because if not it will dry out (more than it already has) and eventually break off. I strongly advise against chemical treatments. Try a good old fashion ';hot press'; if you need your hair straight.
